Fila brings back Pierluigi Rolando and the wilder side of retro tennis.

Svetland Kuznetsova US Open 2011Bring back the prints. There is a demand for the wilder side of retro. Target has just announced a new Missoni collection and Fila has brought back the designs of Pierluigi Rolando. Now Missoni didn't do much for tennis but Rolando was a game-changer, for Fila and for tennis fashion.

The Italian designed tennis apparel for the growing brand from 1970-1984 outfitting players such as Björn Borg, Boris Becker and Yvonne Goolagong. If you lived the day, you will certainly recall the prints that became his signature.

Francine Candiotti, Fila's current senior designer, met with Rolando last year to create a new retro inspired line for the brand some of which is trotting out at the US Open. Rolando's leather bound notebooks and drawing pads have actually been an inspiration for other current Fila styles as well.

PIctured above is Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia who wore the new Pierluigi v neck top, $58 and skort, $60. Both performance pieces come with a white or peacoat base. The print is all-over.

I personally like the Pierluigi dress, $70, with white base, scoop neck and t-back. It's really fun. The fact that the design is set to the side makes this large print wearable and not body enlarging.

Another fashion trend hits the courts in time for Fashion Week. Tennis is on it.

Find the Pierluigi line at Fila. The dress will be available after the Open.
