Slam fashion: Ginny Hilfiger, heritage and a hot new tennis line from Fila
Ginny Hilfiger, Creative Director of Global Heritage at Fila, is the designer behind Fila's gorgeous new Heritage collection for the French Open. A singles player herself, her first tennis collection for Fila is influenced by her love for our game, timeless French style and nautical tradition. The muses connect via signature style elements culled from Fila's archives.
Housed within a gorgeous museum in Biella, Italy, Fila's archives include the brand's past designs for alpine skiing, basketball, lifestyle, motosport, mountaineering, swimming and tennis. Hilfiger spent hours in the museum pouring over vintage textiles, prints and photos while creating the new line.
“It is from these archived sources that I developed trim and pattern codes for the new [tennis] lines,” said Hilfiger. “The navy and white trim you see on the women's French Open line, for example, is one such detail.”
I see Björn Borg's signature headband reflected in the dress straps above.
“For the men," continued Hilfiger, "there's a zig-zag stitch that mirrors the detail on Borg’s original polos [new navy polo below left and on Dmitry Tursunov below]. Or, stitched shoulders that flashback to Fila’s racing days” [as seen on Andreas Seppi below].
You can see a racing style stripe down the back of the red men's crew below.
Jelena Jankovic, Nadia Petrova, Julia Goerges, Yaroslava Shvedova, Janko Tipsarevic, Dmitry Tursunov and Andreas Seppi will all wear new Fila Heritage (what you see here and more) in Paris at the French Open.
Jankovic will wear the beauty new mitred dress above. Goerges (2nd and 3rd pics down) Nadia Petrova, Vera Zvonareva and Yaroslava Shvedova will all add dashes of blazing yellow to their stripes (that skort BTW, on Goerges…LOVE and own).
Fabulously fun group. Great to have Hilfiger’s talents (and passions) on court.
