US Open Day 1: I’ll have the Upset Special, please

What would the US Open be without some high profile players getting knocked out on the first day? Dominika Cibulkova has defeated #7 Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

And last year’s finalist Kei Nishikori is on his way home. He was defeated 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 by Benoit Paire. Overall, a good start for Team Lacoste with these two wins.

Jelena Jankovic lost 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 to France’s unseeded Oceane Dodin.

Mens #16 Gael Monfils is out, having to retire in the third set of his match with Illya Marchenko, due to an injury.

And #29 Sloane Stephens is a goner, defeated by fellow American Coco Vanderweghe 6-4, 6-3. She also gave an on-court interview during the match! Mattek-Sands awaits in the next round.
