Red flag on red meat

Today the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the cancer research agency of World Health Organization reported that processed and red meat consumption can lead to cancer. Yes…that means add bacon to your list of “just say no.” The new report places processed meat in the highest category of agents classified as carcinogenic to humans, alongside cigarettes, alcohol and asbestos.

Red meat is classified in the second-highest category of known carcinogens. The WHO’s study was published in the UK Medical Journal The Lancet.

Below you’ll find visualizations that chart red meat consumption and the incidence and mortality of colon cancer over the years. Also included is a list detailing the nutritional content of the unhealthiest red meats.

The above data was curated by and sourced from the National Chicken Council, the National Cancer Institute, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Bureau for Labor Statistics and ESHA Research.
