Sharapova joins Elton, BJK, Martina and Mac at WTT Smash Hits in Las Vegas
Maria Sharapova returned to the tennis courts last night for the first time in almost nine months, playing on a specially-constructed tennis court adjacent to Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for World Team Tennis Smash Hits. It was a very cool looking setting outdoors amidst the Vegas lights.
Sharapova played in the charity event for the first time in its 24-year history. She wore the outfit she had planned to wear at the 2016 U.S. Open.
WTT Smash Hits, co-hosted by Sir Elton John and Billie Jean King, raises funds for the Elton John AIDS Foundation. The event had a pretty good lineup, too. John McEnroe, Andy Roddick, Martina Navratilova, Mardy Fish, Mark Philippoussis, Liezel Huber, and Taylor Johnson took part.
Since 1993, WTT Smash Hits has raised more than $14 million for the Elton John AIDS Foundation and local AIDS charities.
John, King and all players participated in a pre-match live auction, which included an Elton John signed piano bench , King’s Wimbledon tickets and a private tennis lesson with King (went for 20K) among other items.
Afterwards, the players formed two teams captained by King and John and played a WTT match featuring singles and doubles action. In the end, Team Elton defeated Team Billie Jean 19-14 to move ahead 13-11 in the series.
