Serena Williams Announces She Is Pregnant

In a surprising announcement that has taken the tennis world by storm, Serena Williams has announced she is pregnant! She made a stealth announcement on her Snapchat channel earlier today with the caption “20 weeks.” Sports Illustrated says she deleted the post soon after it went up.

She was engaged to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian back in December, and won the Australian Open in January. As Deadspin notes, “if the 20-week timeline in her Snapchat is accurate, Williams won a Grand Slam final while roughly 10 weeks pregnant.”

This has obvious implications for the WTA Tour. She’s obviously out for the rest of the year, and who knows about 2018? (She pulled out of Indian Wells and Miami.) In 2016, she was a French finalist, the winner at Wimbledon, and a semifinalist at the U.S. Open. That is a lot of points that she will not be able to defend, and other players like Kerber, Pliskova, Cibulkova and Halep will be poised to leapfrog her in the rankings. The last time Williams was off the tour for an extended period was 2010, and Caroline Wozniacki assumed the top spot. Brad Gilbert says the field is now wide open:

A Serena rep later confirmed the news:

My only regret is not pointing my toe sorry coach Garry 🙈
