On Elina Svitolina

The Ukraine born Elina Svitolina is currently number 11 in the world, and has won more matches on tour this year (31) than anyone else and is number one in the race for the end of year championships for Singapore. She has beaten the world number one Angelique Kerber three times this year and surely her win against Simona Halep in the Rome Master’s final will make her the most discussed player on the WTA tour. She has wins over Serena Williams, Garbine Muguruza and Petra Kvitova.

Svitolina has a smile that would light up any room, but an ice cold personality when she has a racquet in her hand. In a third set thriller in Rome yesterday, she took the racquet out of Simona Halep’s hand, Halep only managing one game in that final set. Going into the match, the mentally strong Halep was the commentators favourite, but they would have been well advised to have spoken to Svitolina beforehand. The 22 year old says her favoured surfaces are clay and grass, which would imply that, with the French Open and Wimbledon round the corner, that we can’t rule her out of finals there too.

  1. She’s now Top 6. She has a shot in finishing World No.1 and she’ll be one of the youngest too in the last few years dominated by Serena Williams. I think she has an explosive game. If she remains consistent, she’ll be able to push for more great results.
