Bouchard Beats Sharapova In Three Sets

In a highly anticipated match that ran 2 hours 51 minutes, Genie Bouchard defeated Maria Sharapova 7-5 2-6 6-4 to advance in the Madrid Open, her biggest win in ages. After Bouchard’s earlier remarks, it was going to be interesting to see how they met at the net regardless of the outcome.

She said ‘well played’,” said Bouchard. “And I think she’s been playing really well in her so-called comeback, if you want to call it that.

Yes Virginia, they did shake hands (briefly) at the end of the match:

I think I would be worried about myself if I sat here and said I’m pretty happy with losing a tennis match, no matter who I face, no matter what round it is, whether it’s the first round or final of a Grand Slam, said Sharapova.

And here are the match stats and highlights.

We scoured the internet and discovered this live YouTube feed of Maria Sharapova/Genie Bouchard at the Madrid Open. Amazing how small the crowd is, right? It’s not chilly or anything- (except between the players) -match time temp was 81 degrees. Anyway- grab some popcorn and enjoy!

  1. What a big victory for Genie. I wonder if she lost that match, what will be Maria’s reaction to the press. I hope to see more of the two in the next few weeks. Instant rivalry!
