Brinke’s French Open Tennis Fashion Picks

Roland GarrosThe first week has wrapped up in Paris. How have the major brands scored in terms of visibility? Nike has taken the biggest hit as three of their big four are sitting this one out, but the ever-present Rafa Nadal is storming towards title #10, which is just insane. Adidas still has players in the draw heading into week two, though Kerber and Tsonga flamed out in the opening round. Let’s take a closer look at some of my favorite looks on court, with Lacoste my pick as best in show at their home event, with Adidas a close second. (Karin’s picks are here.)

Lacoste: Novak Djokovic

This is just a fantastic look. Especially with the dark shorts- they tie in with the dark colors in the polo. If the shorts were white I wouldn’t like it nearly as much. His new signature line is a major upgrade for the Djoker after five years in the wilderness with Uniqlo. They didn’t market him worth beans, (did you ever see a Djoker shirt at a Uniqlo store?) but you will be seeing a lot of the Serb with Lacoste’s marketing muscle. He’ll wear all white at Wimbledon (imagine that) and the blue version of this top at Flushing Meadow. Find it: TW/USATW/Europe

Lacoste: Dominika Cibulkova and Alize Cornet

Bold orange and conservative white color blocking make these a winner. Lacoste and Adidas are both making use of the pleated skirt look, which spins traditional. Cornet’s still in, while Domi is headed to the grass courts, or the beach for a vaca. Find it: TW/USATW/Europe

Adidas: Simona Halep

Simona just looks excellent in this outfit that she’ll wear only here, as it’s co-branded with the RG logo. A much better and older look for her than those separates she was wearing leading up to the French, which didn’t even sport the adidas logo on the top. Find it: TW/USATW/Europe

Adidas: Garbiñe Muguruza

She lost over the weekend in Paris, but her Stella McCartney Adidas look was an instant classic. White with dark grey and black were a great combo for her. Maybe she’ll stick with it for the Wimbledon lead up events. Find it: TW/USATW/Europe

Adidas: Woz

More Stella/Adidas. Woz is listed here because she’s Woz. She makes every best-dressed list. That’s it. Find it: TW/USATW/Europe

Hydrogen: Fabio Fognini and Jozef Kovalik

Fognini wears the red/white/blue of the high-end Italian line well. The color blocking reminds me of classic Fila. On the flip side of the Hydrogen coin, Kovalik opted for an olive green kinda camo, and that’s just not…good. The man bun on top is just the fashion faux pas cherry on the cake. If I was the tournament ump I would have considered defaulting him for the hair. (However, even The Goat makes mistakes.) Find it: TW/USATW/Europe

  1. I have to agree on Fabio’s Hydrogen kit. He looks so good on it. Novak’s kit till end of the year are all amazing! This kit from French Open is an instant classic. In women’s side, I love Alize’s dress as well as Kiki’s dress (not in the list). I also have to give credit to Martina’s collection and Venus’ love for print.

  2. I agree with all except Muguruza. Her dress looks like the fit is too big or too lose. The fit looks much better on Wozniacki.
