“Fashion and tennis go hand-in-hand. Australian were progressive in
their thinking back then, backing the best and brightest players and our identity remains central to everything we do. We feel that our new collection is a nod to our past, whist embracing the trends, technologies and raw materials of the future.” Australian L’Alpina Founder, Mr Giordano Maioli
As promised, here’s a bit more for those who want more of the history that is behind these looks.
From the tennis courts of the late 1950’s and early 1960s, the Australian L’Alpina range of sports clothing was synonymous with style, practicality and comfort. By using innovative designs and technically advanced materials, the Australian brand pioneered the modern sports clothing scene of today and set the way for sports clothing to be worn as stylish leisurewear.
L’Alpina Maglierie Sportive S.p.A. was founded in 1946. It launched the Australian brand in 1956. True to its founding roots, this high-end line is still produced in Italy.
More recently, the company was the official clothing supplier to the 2017 Italian Open in Rome.
The brand currently sponsors Britain’s James Ward, (immediately below). Former big names wearing the Australian include eight-time Grand Slam doubles winner Anders Järryd, Wimbledon winner Goran Ivanišević, and eight-time Grand Slam winner Ivan Lendl.
