The fashionable Maria Sharapova (already in Australia and taking time to do some shopping – for the first time – at Queen Victoria Market headlines the ladies sporting Nike tennis attire at the 2014 Australian Open.
The Russian’s Premier Maria Tunic Dress comes in a pale blue (a color called “Glacier Ice”). The top works well for Maria’s long torso and the accompanying compression shorts feature a graphic print in Matte Silver. Sharapova will wear a NikeID version of the Zoom Vapor 9 Tour.
World No. 1, Serena Williams, will compete in the Serena Oz Open dress, by far our favorite of all the Nike offerings for Melbourne. Look out for the triangle-shaped perforations in the skirt. Flat rubber tabs around the armholes and the front of the dress help keep it in place while Serena moves around the court.
The color blocking gives the already fit player even more definition. Along with Glacier Ice and Black, the dress is also available in Red Violet (pink, as above). The 5-time Australian Open champion won the Brisbane International title last week, letting the rest of the WTA field know that she is ready to contend for the first Slam of the season.
Australian Open defending champion Victoria Azarenka will wear the sportier Nike Advantage Printed Tank, Pleated Woven Skirt combination and the new Lunar Ballistec. The styles are pretty straightforward athletic gear (complete with a junior-friendly TV static print on her top) - the highlight is the Tech Fleece Cape warm-up that’s cut like a loose motorcycle jacket.
2013 Australian Open runner-up Li Na keeps her signature V-neck cap sleeve top for this year’s run in Melbourne, pairing the Dri-FIT piece with the Unlined Woven Skirt and Solid Ball Short. Her accent color is Bright Magenta. Last week, the Chinese No. 1 earned her first title of 2014 at the inaugural Shenzhen Open in China. --Erwin Ong
