Earlier this week WTA player Gisela Gulko of Argentina stepped off the Sony Ericsson Miami courts to join 25 fellow tennis players to raise money for "Break Point: Let's win the match against poverty." The event was organized by Un Techo para mi Pais (UTPMP) a Latin American non-profit that mobilizes volunteers to eradicate extreme povery in the region. Gabriela Sabatini, fellow Argentine and former WTA great, joined the evening as well.
Money raised during the event will be used to buy materials for student volunteers that will build houses for 25 families currently living in slum conditions. The organization also provides guidance and tools to empower the newly housed families.
UTPMP is currently present in 19 countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela.
