Simona Halep Wearing Nike At Fed Cup

World #2 Simona Halep appears to have signed a deal with Nike. We qualify this since there has been no official confirmation from anyone- nothing yet showing on her Twitter or Instagram pages, and zero from Nike. These Twitter posts show her at the Fed Cup. (Earlier reports indicated she would miss this event due to her ankle; maybe she’s just hanging out, providing support for the team and getting a brief hit in.) It seems the anonymous little red dress and mostly unmarked adidas sneakers are history. Those are the Nike Air Zoom Vapor X’s she’s wearing, BTW. Find it: TW/USA β€’ TW/Europe

There was a story posted today on an Italian website about all this, too. When you run it through Google Chrome’s translate, it comes out like this:

The images leave no doubt: Simona Halep has closed the deal with Nike and will wear the heads of the American “mustache” since the Doha tournament. After non-renewal with Adidas, he played a month without a sponsor. A former Romanian politician even proposed that the nation sponsor it. Is the agreement with Halep a Nike strategy against Shrapova?

Mustache? Shrapova? I love Google Translate.

If in fact the ink has been put to the contract, Halep joins Sloane Stephens as the newest members of the Nike roster. Perhaps they’re trying to shore up their position on the women’s pro side, given the fact Serena won’t be playing forever. The other fact to take into consideration is Simona’s Eastern European heritage- Nike should make inroads there with her immense popularity, much like they did in signing China’s Li Na.
