Elina Svitolina Wins NYC Tie Break Tens

Elina Svitolina has won her first Tie Break Tens tournament this evening, following a thrilling battle with Shuai Zhang in the final at New York’s legendary sports venue, Madison Square Garden. Having seen off Venus Williams and CoCo Vandeweghe in the previous rounds of the new fast-paced, short-form tennis competition, Elina Svitolina dominated in all of her matches to take home the champion’s check of $250,000.

It’s amazing to win the first ever Tie Break Tens tournament in the US. I had a lot of fun out there on the court and it was great to see the crowd get behind the speed and intensity of the game. -ES

It was a night of surprises, with Serena Williams losing out to Shuai Zhang in a closely contested semi-final, despite a promising start. Tie Break Tens tournaments are held over one day and involve eight players competing in a knock-out format, with each match consisting of a super tie-break to ten points. The New York competition follows successful tournaments in London, Vienna, Madrid and Melbourne.

Tie Break Tens New York was held in partnership with the Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF) – the leading authority on the participation of women and girls in sports. As part of the partnership, Tie Break Tens is donating $35,000 to the WSF to support ongoing programs and further the organization’s mission to improve the health, education and leadership skills of girls through equitable access to sports.
