Maria Sharapova Designs New Nike LA Cortez
Maria Sharapova has long had a keen interest in the design that goes into Nike products, such as her dress at last summer’s US Open. Now, she has had a hand in the development of a new look for her favorite sneaker, the Nike Cortez. (The Cortez debuted in 1972, one of Nike’s first shoes. Maria debuted, er, was born, in 1987.) The Nike LA Cortez launched today at Nordstrom and their website, and March 2 on the Nike’s SNKRS app and website, plus Nike The Grove and Nike Santa Monica. (Maria will make an appearance at The Grove location Friday night, but it’s sold out.)
Update: Speaking of sold out, the shoe is now out of stock at Nordstrom.

I love how it’s minimal and understated in certain ways, yet there’s so much attention to detail with the finishes, materials and even color. I was inspired by my morning walks along the coast on my way to practice, and I think we captured that peaceful essence in this shoe. -MS
The color palette was inspired by LA’s laid-back vibes and the earthy hues of a West Coast sunrise. The tennis star says she wanted to create a shoe that captured “LA’s high style.”
Playing off of Sharapova’s childhood interest in calligraphy, the shoe utilizes refined design lines for an off-court elegance. Thoughtful attention to craft and detail brings dimensional layering with premium suedes, leathers and soft gold accents.
